Unfolded Memories – Loss ~ Sauda

ACUD GALERIE 19h → Concert & Exhibition & Performance

Unfolded Memories – Loss ~ Sauda is a sound-driven multidisciplinary experience, conceived as a meditative and introspective environment. It is a suspended, sonic space of uncomfortable intimacy, comprising four different performances happening in sequence during the same evening.

The music is all original material composed by Simone Antonioni and features isolated melodies, stolen dialogues, personal notes, as well as music released on Verlag in 2020 and unreleased material recorded between 2017 – 2020. Fashion plays a role in Unfolded Memories visions, which is encapsulated in the still melancholy of cold manufactured beauty and in the staging of aesthetic gestures.

Loss ~ Sauda takes place in ACUD Galerie on October 8, 2020 and is composed by the following performances:
-Loss
-Elegy
-Neverborn
-Sauda

ABOUT

Unfolded Memories – Loss ~ Sauda is a collaborative project between:

Simone Antonioni
... is a Berlin based Artist that releases music with few aliases, one of which is Unfolded Memories. His music has been featured in XLR8R, Vice, Kaltblut and CoS. An obsession towards fashion images led him to work on sound for design related projects both in Italy and Berlin.

Kate Chen
... is an artist and architect living in Berlin. Her projects take the form of installation, video, drawing, text, and scenography. The concepts focus on entanglements between the body, cybernetics, and architecture, especially how they relate to perception and mythologies of space. For this performance, Kate designed the scenography and a site-specific fragrance installation.

FluxGeist
... is a platform of collective work that facilitates technology in the creative process. The studio offers developments in human-computer interaction systems by covering a spectrum of light, sound, embedded electronics and online webpages for use creative in applications. For this performance, a site-specific light installation was conceived to further the immersion into the world of Unfolded Memories.

Frank Wang
... works as an architect and photographer in Berlin. His recent work includes an essay on urban rituals and responses to terrorism for the Cornell Journal of Architecture, a photo essay exploring one of Shenzhen’s last urban villages for Metropolis magazine, and a restaurant/flower shop hybrid in Beijing. His work usually gravitates towards urban rituals, statistical anomalies, and dirty things. For this performance, Frank designed the scenography.

PROGRAMME

Loss (or the deserts inside) 19-20H SOLD OUT
Tickets

Loss is the debut record by Unfolded Memories, released on Verlag in March 2020. Loss is an absurd reflection on absence. This is the zone in which distant melodies roam around like sad thoughts, thoughts of yesterday are slowly erased and sentimental moods are settled in through gentle minimal forms. It’s like a surgical removal but in melodic form*.

In the live transposition of the record, the artist reworks the songs and incorporates different recordings and conversations from the period spent living in the Künstlerhaus Parkstraße (2016-2017). Loss is also a consequence of the art that inspired UM, such as the work of Jean Tinguely and the live experience of William Basinski.

Elegy (speak to me) 20-21H SOLD OUT
Tickets

Elegy’s incipit is the lyrical compositions Adonais by Percy Shelley and Manfred by Lord Byron in a recorded vocal rearrangement by SL Shunt. Inspired by the inescapable need of not belonging and the absence of a friend, this performance deconstructs compositions from LOSS and explores the spatial and emotive potential of minimalism production. Sounds are so minimal that sometimes they become ghosts –– the reflection of themselves. The mood is tinted with melancholia counterbalanced by moments of feverish presence, in which the melody falls in contradiction with the harmony.

Neverborn (non ci apparteniamo) 21 - 22H
Tickets

Neverborn explores the intensity of Inorganic matter; the sound palette is heavily built on digital distortion and heavily influenced by UM research in the sonic endeavour of the early works of the GRM. The style of this narrative is very assemblage, a nod towards sci-fi sound aesthetics and the work of Tim Hecker. This performance is by definition alienated from life, as it lays softly on a familiar yet sinister veil. Neverborn features a collaboration with Healer, also released on Verlag earlier in May this year.

Sauda (teach me how to breathe) 22-23H
Tickets

The music in Sauda is designed for a specific function: calming. The process of calmness through sound is explored in Sauda in the form of dialogues between evolving looped sections and never repeating melodic sustain. It results in a caring and warm environment that allows for a trance-like state.

Part of the music performed in “Sauda” will be released on Verlag the 25.09
