BELLS: an exhibition with Antonia Christl, Dani & Sheilah ReStack, Renato Settembre curated by anorak

Both a signal of warning and summoning, the remote sound of Bells serves as a cue to engage with the work of Antonia Christl, Dani & Sheilah ReStack, and Renato Settembre. Somewhere in between ritual and catastrophe, violent coincidence and the intimate surfaces of our ordinary lives, the works gathered in this exhibition, each in their own way, face a contemporary environment without asserting a detached position. Here, making oneself vulnerable is a necessary step in order to confront questions of accountability by exploring possible registers of experience. In the words of Sheilah ReStack, this has to do with “that simultaneous capacity – signalling joy and warning.” Following this line of thought, the exhibition Bells is not a wake-up call. Instead, it brings together artistic practices that attend to the vacancies between subjective and collective desires, and thereby reveal that we’re always already in the thing that we call for and that calls us.

Entferntes Glockengeläut, sowohl Warnung als auch Signal der Beschwörung und Versammlung, ist der Ausgangspunkt für eine Auseinandersetzung mit Arbeiten von Antonia Christl, Dani & Sheilah ReStack und Renato Settembre. Zwischen Ritual und Katastrophe, der Brutalität des Zufalls und den intimen Oberflächen unseres alltäglichen Lebens, wenden sich die gezeigten Werke ihrer zeitgenössischen Umgebung zu, ohne eine schützende Distanz zu behaupten. Sich verletzlich zu machen ist hier ein notwendiger Schritt, um sich durch die Erfahrungsregister künstlerischer Imagination, Fragen der Verantwortlichkeit und Teilhabe zu stellen. In den Worten von Sheilah ReStack geht es dabei um den Ausdruck „einer Gleichzeitigkeit von Freude oder Gleichmut und Alarmiertheit“. In diesem Sinne ist die Ausstellung BELLS gerade kein Weckruf, sondern versammelt künstlerische Positionen, die sich jeweils auf ihre Art und Weise in den Lücken zwischen subjektivem und kollektivem Begehren ansiedeln. Darin offenbart sich, dass wir immer schon Teil dessen sind, was wir einfordern und wünschen, was uns ruft – auch dann, wenn wir es selbst noch nicht bemerkt haben.
