    FROM THE PAMIR MOUNTAINS TO THE ALTAI

    From spring 2016 onwards Tanding spent 120 days following the Yarkant and the Tarim river down from the Pamir mountains into the northern steppes recording the traditional music of the Uyghurs, Tatars, Salar, Hui, Uzbek, Kazakh, Mongol, Daur and Kirgiz in Xinjiang.

    From the Tajik eagle dance performed with eagle bone flutes to the Uyghur Muqam – classical melodies which are accompanied by lyrics and poetry originally collected in the 16th century by the princess Amani Shahan – the music reflects the different historical influences from India, Iran, China and Greece which came along the Silk road to this crossing point of cultures. Further North the mind enlarging Kazakh and Mongolic music mirrors the vastness of the Steppes.

    Tanding recorded 175 different musical groups and performers she encountered in the villages and cities along this part of the Silk road and presents a selection of these recordings, videos and photographies from her journeys.

    Shi Tanding was born 1976 in Ily in Xinjiang province and founded together with Laurent Jeanneau in 2006 the Kink Gong label, publishing mostly recordings from Cambodia, Vietnam and Lhaos.

    HOPE – RECORD RELEASE SHOW

Lieder, zusammengestaucht
    auf ein Wort, als solle der Hörer keine Zeit mit Lesen verschwenden, sondern zuhören. Zuhören und eintauchen in die endlose Hope-Welle von Sound, Wucht und Schwarz. Und ja, die ikonische Sängerin Christine Börsch-Supan ist während all dem nackt. Wir erahnen sie nur – Es ist zu dunkel. Sphärisch, düster, gravitätisch. Die Musik der Berliner Band Hope fühlt sich ein bisschen an wie Frost auf der Haut, stellt Haare auf. Irgendwie kann man sie einatmen, riechen, schmecken und fühlen. Dichter flächendeckender Sound, wabernde Synthesizer, noisige Gitarren, dezente Percussion und eine Stimme, die unaufgeregt stellenweise an Björk, Savages oder Karen O erinnert. // Homepage

    ABOUT

    M!R!M
    4 years after the release of debut album Heaven via Fabrika Records, M!R!M is back with Iuvenis, a dark/pop LP with 14 new tracks smoothly sewn by the young London based Italian Jack Milwaukee. “Iuvenis is the result of two years of writing in my bedroom”, Jack says. Entirely written with analog and digital synths, vintage drum machines, blurry vocals and dark bass lines, Iuvenis is once again a DIY work. The album is clearly influenced by the 80’s post-punk / synth pop scene ( New Order, The Wake, Killing Joke ); yet it differs from the previous album and follows the last work released such as the 7 Inch Matilde / Velvet Dress and the dream pop experience matured with Leave The Planet. The “StoryTelling” in Iuvenis is more obvious than before, the album takes the listener to a deep nostalgic obscurity where laying down and being cuddled gently by the solitude is a must, while the sealing gets pierced by soft dreams and impossible hopes to reach. Iuvenis is out on Manic Depression Records.

    //

    LOLA KUMTUS
    A Finnish minimal synth duo consisting of musical couple XX & XY, Lola Kumtus’ music delves into the soundscapes of the time when analogue synths and drum machines were kings, featuring lyrics inspired by, among other things, psychoanalysis. The band formed 2012 in Helsinki. Things went fast and soon band found its music in various compilations. Lola K has released two EPs including the brand new The Leftovers and an album. The new material is toward to more simple but still polyrhythmic approach to make danceable music. Lola K has been described as a unique live act so don`t miss their gig at Herzschlag.

    //

    BRUSQUE TWINS
    … is Hollie Hensman and Derek Evan George. The duo started working with synths and software after moving to Montreal in 2009. By 2011, they had released several tracks online that received international attention from music blogs. The same year, they released their first EP ‘Cliff Dweller’ on local label Visage Musique, which they co-founded, and began playing live shows in the burgeoning Montreal synth scene. A mini album ‘A Voice In The Night’ was released the following year. BT played festivals in Montreal and select dates in Toronto & NYC. They opened for bands Black Marble, Kontravoid, Soft Metals as well as label mates Gold Zebra and Police Des Moeurs. Over the next few years, the BT aesthetic evolved into EBM & Techno territories with an emphasis on the physical aspect of performance and composition, with live shows presented in pitch black with a single strobe light following their silhouettes to the pounding rhythms. Their last EP, ‘TRASHBAG’, is the end result of these transformations. They are currently recording a follow up. Expect live surprises.

    SOUNDING IMAGES #10: BORGHESIA

    Industrial Music, Multimedia Art and Queer Activism in 1980s Yugoslavia, introduced by Natalie Gravenor

    //

    Artist collective Borghesia from Ljubljana (today Slovenia, through its subcultural practice – club operation, DJIng, production of theater, music and videos – created spaces where nonheteronormative sexualities could be explored, with the group developing new forms of artistic expression for this. In 1985 Borghesia released on its own FV Video label the video album Tako Mladi (So Young), now considered a milestone of Slovenian video art. A second video album, Triumf zelje (Triumph of Desire), followed in 1989. The same year, media artists Zemira Alajbegovic and Neven Korda left the collective, and Borghesia focused on music. In 1995 Borghesia released its last album, before founding members Aldo Ivancic and Dario Sereval revived the group in 2009.

    The program features the documentary collage Staro in novo (Old and New) by Zemira Alajbegovic and Neven Korda, a summary of the scene’s activities, as well as selected clips from Borghesia’s video albums Tako mladi Triumf zelje. Clips of other Ljubljana new wave and punk bands as well as by the Borghesia follow up project BAST and from Borghesia’s 2014 revival album round out the program.

    BORGHESIA
    … is an industrial and EBM (electronic body music) band and multimedia/theater collective formed in Ljubljana in 1982. Along with Laibach, they were the most prominent representatives of the Slovene alternative scene of the 1980s, having created their own signature style of music that was closely interwoven with their performances and progressive social practice. The group’s aesthetics – lyrics, visual performance, video production – explored the tension between repression and surveillance and transgressive, non-heteronormative sexualities. Borghesia disbanded in 1994 but two original members, Aldo Ivancic and Dario Sereval, revived the group in 2009. In 2014 Borghesia released an album of new material, And Man Created God, and occasionally performs live.

    The series SOUNDING IMAGES focuses on different approaches to documenting and visualizing musical performances, scenes and movements as well as close collaborations between filmmakers and composers, including soundtracks. The aim of it is to open up a wide range of perspectives on the interrelation of music, experimental filmmaking, and video art, including issues regarding race, class, sexuality and gender. Invited guests will discuss selected works and a short introduction to each screening will provide background information, sometimes a Q&A will follow.
