ABOUT

SHACKE ONE
Berlin, anno 2017. Everyday life is characterized by an atmosphere of doom and gloom—rent prices continue to climb; indistinguishable neighborhood institutions are being replaced by temples of consumerism; the city’s famous/infamous nightlife is now, most of all, catered to tourists. You can choose to see the city’s condition this pessimistically, but you don’t have to. You can also do as the North Berliner (Weddinger, to be exact) Shacke One does and chill in a wading pool sipping on a Sterni, throw back wine from the box, and haunt subway tunnels all night long. Yup, that other Berlin—that raw, devious, anarchist, rule- and institution-skeptical paradise for male and female homies alike—still exists. Hardly anyone embodies today’s version of this Berlin better than Shacke One, who renounces a mandate for innovation in a contemporary hip hop and instead delivers verbal ammunition over vinyl-sampled funk and soul beats with a superior microphone presence. It’s known to some as battle rap.

HUNNEY PIMP
Austria, and specifically Vienna, seems to be something like the chosen land for musicians of all persuasions. There’s no other explanation for the fact that such a large percentage of the most interesting pop artists working between the underground and the mainstream today come from the old heart of Europe. Maybe it’s the moldy neighborhood bars, coffee houses, and time-warped quality of this beautiful city that give young artists like Hunney Pimp just the kind of freedom needed by a young person who wants to start doing her own thing. In the case of Hunney Pimp, that means connecting stoner rap with singsang and 1A hooks. At this point there’s not a lot known about Hunney Pimp, but the artistic circles in which she moves already reveal quite a bit: she’s loosely associated with the Salzburg crew Hanuschplatzflow (HPF), which according to experts is the most influential underground rap collective of recent years. Among the members of this band of free hip hop spirits are Young Krillin, Crack Ignaz, and a certain Yung Hurn. Hunney Pimp is supported by HPF, but she does her own thing—she is, after all, a free spirit—and her June show at Torstraßen Festival is her first appearance in Berlin.

DER TÄUBLING
The artist’s full name is Amadeus Magnus Ephraima Täubling. He’s professor of applied misanthropy and artistically active as “Der Täubling.” His music is associated with the genre “Major-League Dissing” but might also be classified as battle rap. Der Täubling was long one of the best-kept secrets of the local hip hop scene, and partly because he himself didn’t seem to give a damn about playing the game. In the meantime, though, Der Täubling seems to have overcome his shyness and has a new album out. It’s called Der Täubling and is just what the doctor ordered for fans of old-school rap, which first elevated the heavyweight dissing of a fictional opponent to the status of “the one true art form.” What the gods of those days make of Der Täubling is thus far TBD, but one thing is for sure: this is an artist worth hearing. Just one warning: this guy often irritates before he amazes.

MAVI PHOENIX
The young Austrian Mavi Phoenix, who grew up in Linz and now lives in Vienna, had only written a handful of songs before she started to attract the attention of journalists and the music industry. Before the blogs (among them many renowned international ones) were overcome with enthusiasm, there was an essential cosign through one of today’s most reliable German-speaking bands—specifically, Maurice Ernst of Vienna’s Bilderbuch heard one of Maxi Phoenix’s first songs and called her up directly. Since then, a lot has happened for this young woman in her early twenties. Her sound world uses English texts and a mixture of contemporary RnB and playful hip hop to draft a sonic approach catchy enough to produce instant ear worms but also elegant enough to persuade listeners to stay. And best of all: though her recent EP Young Prophet already sounded sophisticated beyond its years, Mavi is only just starting out!
