Hazy Borders Of The Heart

Hazy borders of the heart ist ein zweitägiges Symposium zu Körper, Begehren und geteilten Räumen. Das Symposium ist die Veröffentlichung und Erweiterung eines Gendertheorie-Seminars an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig und die Fortführung des Ausstellungsprojekts 1.-3. Person singular / plural. Es setzt sich aus drei Panels zusammen, die jeweils wechselnde Rauminstallationen, Screenings, Vorträge und Performances von Studierenden und eingeladenen Künstler_innen verbinden.
 
Hazy borders of the heart is a two-day symposium that will take as its theme: the body, desire, and shared spaces. The conference stems from a gender theory seminar at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, which, in conjunction with the exhibition project “1.-3. person singular / plural,” will for these two days be open to the public. The symposium comprises three segments, with each exploring a single theme via installations, screenings, lectures, and performances by a students and invited artists.

Panel 1: fragile bodies / gentle resistance
 
Wenn Körpern Macht zugeschrieben wird, geht es meist nicht darum, welche Teile ein Körper hat, sondern welche er einsetzt, sagt Bini Adamczak. Was, wenn die Grenzen und Parts nicht mehr so ganz klar zu unterscheiden sind, im gewalttätigen Einsatz oder im vorsichtigeren Austausch, wenn es Körper sind, die sich verformen, die sich sanft überstülpen, überraschend anders kleiden, verfliegen? Ein re-reading von Zuschreibungen und Positionierung von LGTBQI bis Human Ressources mit Harfenklängen und Riot Porn.
 
When power is attributed to bodies, it is not usually a matter of which parts a certain body has but which it uses, says Bini Adamczak. But what happens, when it’s no longer so clear where the borders of these parts are? Whether through violent force or careful exchange, it becomes difficult to parse these borders when bodies deform or gently impose themselves upon other bodies or dress surprisingly different or evaporate. Here, a re-reading of attributes and positions, from LGBTQI+ to human resources, via harp concert and riot porn.

Panel 2: his body, herself / the female gaze
 
Mit dem female gaze zu blicken, sagt seine Erfinderin Jill Solway, bedeutet unlikeable characters likeable zu machen, mit warmem Licht und guter Musik. Aber vielleicht geht es auch um mehr: Beim Teilen oder Vermitteln der eigenen Sicht auszuhandeln, für welche sie gelten kann oder soll, und wie beweglich die Grenzen sind vom Mitteilen, Mögen, Begehren und Verstehen.
 
Recently, Jill Solway spoke of the female gaze in terms of ‘making unlikeable characters likeable by use of warm light and good music. But there is  more to it: not least, a conscious negotiation of who is being addressed when sharing or transmitting one’s own view, as well as a marked flexibility when it comes the actions of communicating, liking, desiring, and understanding.

Panel 3: cross-species encounters / desiring the abject other
 
Hinter den Prägungen und normativen Reflexen, die verhindern, den oder die gänzlich Anderen zu begehren, steht vielleicht vor allem die Angst vor der gänzlich anderen Form, die das haben müsste: Nicht ein Haben wollen, zwischen Lieben und Kaputtmachen, sondern ein Sein wollen als Anders werden.
 
Perhaps our cultural imprints and normative reflexes — i.e., that which prevents us from desiring the outright other — are merely a consequence of fear, a fear of being the entirely different form that such a desire would require. This is to say, not a wanting to possess (whether through love or destruction), but a wanting of ‘becoming,’ to become ‘other.’
