VIRGINIA WING (Fire Records)
South London based group Virginia Wing draw influence from the radiophonic sounds of Broadcast, the kosmische wonder of Cluster and the rhythmic propulsion of This Heat whilst never directly emulating any particular style.
Building on the experimentations found on their 7” on CRITICAL HEIGHTSand a 12” EP on Faux Discx records, their debut album Measures Of Joy on Fire Recordsencompasses spoken-word passages, brooding electronics and musique concrete influences to create songs that are at once immediate and truly strange.
The Quietus “like Broadcast or Stereolab before them, they possess that same innate ability to seemingly pause time and space, so that that stylistic meditations – in this case cyclical repeato-rock, synthetically-manipulated shoegaze, 90s-inspired hauntology – are applied”
Spex: “Broadcast, wir werden euch immer vermissen, aber mit Virginia Wing habt ihr würdige Erben gefunden.”
Noisey: “Virginia Wing Is Slinky and Sexy and Sinister All At Once”
Norman Records: “If you buy this and don’t like it I will pay your return post to send it back.” 10/10
Loud and Quiet Magazine: “‘Measures of Joy’ is a piece of noir-pop majesty that constantly pushes its own boundaries and frequently shatters the listeners’ sense of expectation.” 9/10
