Goethe-Institut im Exile: “Pagan” by Andrei Liankevich
Artist Talk and Book Presentation | On the mysticism, symbols, and rituals of pagan traditions in Belarus
Tue., 11.11.19H ACUD Studio
For decades, Belarusian photographer **Andrei Liankevich** has documented disappearing traditions and rituals that still exist in the rural regions of Belarus. *The Carrying of the Candle, Strechanie, the Wedding of the Fireplace, Kaliady (Christmas), the Calling of Spring, St. George’s Day, the Burial of the Arrow,* and many others — behind these unusual names lies an ancient form of social life, rooted in a sacred and respectful coexistence with nature: the forests, swamps, stones, wind, and earth.
When Christianity reached the Belarusian lands in **998**, many of these rituals were branded as pagan and were supposed to be abolished. Yet centuries later, they still exist — officially linked to Christian holidays, but celebrated in a deeply pagan way. The essence and structure of these rituals have remained archaic, untouched at their core, even though their outer framework or names were absorbed into the Christian calendar.
These rituals, which have survived centuries of Russification, globalization, a peculiar form of social capitalism, and other historical upheavals, remain to this day the only living testimony of a unique Belarusian identity — a whispered, hidden act of resistance against powerful forces from both East and West.
Andrei Liankevich began his project **Pagan** in **2008**, becoming the first photographer of his generation to explore the connection between contemporary life and the archaic past of his country. In **2010**, the book *Pagan* was published and received several awards.
Now, after 15 years marked by significant social and political changes in Belarus and the wider region, a **new edition of *Pagan*** has been released.
Experience **Andrei Liankevich** on **November 11 at 7:00 PM** at the **Goethe-Institut in Exile**, where he will present the new edition of *Pagan* and, in conversation with curator **Anna Karpenko**, offer insights into his artistic work.
