In the fourth edition of our event series “Syria: Quo Vadis?”, we are celebrating the launch of the seventh issue of the Weiter Schreiben magazine, in collaboration with the literary platform of the same name! This new edition focuses on present-day Syria – the Syria after the “eternal” regime, after Assad.

The euphoria that radiated from the early texts written after the regime’s fall has faded. Now, there is an acute awareness of all that has passed: the hundreds of thousands who have disappeared, the scars of widespread destruction, and the fear of what lies ahead.

And yet, there is also hope – perhaps the greatest hope for change Syria has known since its independence. Curated by Dima Albitar Kalaji, the issue brings together texts by authors who have returned to Syria, those still living there, and those who have not yet had the chance to go back.

“I recognized the streets, the walls, the stones, and the faces of the people. I recognized myself again.” – Dellair Youssef

We invite you to join us in a warm and wide celebration of this act of recognition, return, and the release of this new edition!

This event is part of the “Syria: Quo Vadis?” series organized by the Goethe-Institut in Exile. Since early 2025, this series has created a space at Berlin’s ACUD Kunsthaus for critical reflection on Syria in the wake of the Assad regime’s fall. Across several evenings, the program explores essential questions of identity, memory, accountability, and visions for the future. The spotlight is on voices from the Syrian diaspora, who share the challenges, perspectives, and hopes they carry for their homeland.
