Rap, electronic music composition and DJing, sound art, multimedia practices, and experimental sounds – Mapping Sounds in Exile, a three-day festival presented by the Goethe-Institut in Exile and the Berlin School of Sound at Kunsthaus ACUD, will take place on October 17th, 18th, and 27th. Musicians from Iran, Lebanon, Belarus, Palestine, and Sudan will host concerts, performances, and listening sessions.
The participating artists, many of whom have been shaped by displacement, come from diverse regions but share intersecting themes of resistance, migration, (non-)arrival, and memory. Music serves as a vital source of connection for these artists, offering a point of orientation in the face of dislocation. While they may have lost their original cultural contexts, their musical traditions and conventions persist, woven into the fabric of their creative output.
Now predominantly based in Berlin, the invited musicians enrich their sonic repertoires by engaging with new cultural environments. Mapping Sounds in Exile not only charts a map of political crisis zones but also constructs an atlas of diverse musical traditions that transcend borders and evolve through cross-cultural exchange. The festival aims to highlight the varied styles and influences of musicians who have faced rupture and reinvention, while promoting their visibility and fostering transnational networks of collaboration.
