2020 was a year that, for a brief moment, put Belarus in the center of media attention, with reportage photography significantly contributing to this. But what did the photographic scene look like before that? How much freedom and what educational and exhibition opportunities did Belarusian visual artists have? Which role did censorship and self-censorship play there (if any)?
Photographers and curators Olga Bubich and Franca Wohlt provide insights into their long-standing photographic collaboration, which has led to a series of exhibitions and professional creative exchange in Berlin.
In this open conversation, Franca and Olga are going to share their views on the visual language and topics of Belarusian photography in the decades that preceded and followed the crucial 2020, as well as on the conditions of the establishment of fruitful horizontal dialogue between German institutions and curators and Belarusian artists - both in exile and in Belarus.
