51 years ago, on 8 April 1971, the foundations of the worldwide Roma emancipation movement were established by the First World Roma Congress in Orpington near London. In 2007, the Venice Biennale hosted for the first time a pavilion organised by Roma themselves entitled Paradise Lost.
In 2022, we have found the lost paradise: Paradise is Now!
The long struggles for equality of Roma, People of Color, queer people and other oppressed groups are bearing fruit. Ten years ago, there was not even a memorial for the Sinti and Roma Holocaust victims, same-sex marriage was not possible in Germany. Most exhibitions, theatre performances and films about Roma were made by white artists. We celebrate our successes – it has never been better!
And yet the situation of people stigmatised as “different” is still catastrophic everywhere. Old threats are joined by new dangers: The Memorial to the Murdered Sinti and Roma of Europe is to make way for a subway, racists are spreading (again) in Germany. The climate crisis has the whole world in its grip, war is raging in Europe and racism does not even stop at the situation of flight and expulsion.
In today's paradise, we therefore ask ourselves: Is there still hope? Where is this paradise, for whom? And for how much longer?
The exhibition and the accompanying programme of performances, lectures, discussions, film screenings and concerts deal in particular:
-with the intersectional character of oppression and the role of feminism and the queer movement in fighting for paradise,
-with social inequality, economic exploitation and its post-colonial, geopolitical dimensions, which are reinforced by globalisation, digitalisation and the use of modern technologies,
- with the history of artistic-political self-representation of Roma and other marginalised groups, and with artistic utopias that can be used to counter future pessimism.

Anlässlich des 51. internationalen Tag e s der Roma* präsentiert die transkulturelle Selbstorganisation RomaTrial e. V. in Zusammenarbeit mit Roma BIPOC und queere Künstler*innen und Aktivist*innen sowie den Institutionen ACUD MACHT NEU, Maxim Gorki Theater und Volksbühne B erlin Rroma Aether Klub Theater im Grünen Salon ein einmonatiges künstlerisches und politisches Programm.
Unter dem Titel „Still Hope in Paradise? Künstlerische und Diskursive Auseinandersetzung mit Zukunftspessimismus und Utopie“ laden sie vom 7. April bis zum 1. Mai 2022 zum Blick in die Zukunft und in die Geschichte der Gleichberechtigung, Selbstermächtigung und Selbstrepräsentanz ein.
Seit dem 8. April 1971 markiert der ROMADAY den Beginn einer weltweiten Emanzipationsbewegung der Roma* im Kampf um soziale Gerechtigkeit und Gleichberechtigung Nach Jahrzehnten harter Arbeit tragen die Kämpfe endlich Früchte, wie etwa die Berufung eines Antiziganismus Beauftragten durch die neue Bundesregierung am 9. März 2022 zeigt. Das soll unbedingt mit vo ller Kraft gewürdigt werden.
Doch aktuelle Gefahren wie der Krieg in der Ukraine der auch etwa 400.000 dort lebende Roma* betrifft, die akute Klimakrise oder nicht zuletzt das Erstarken der Rechtsextremist*innen die erneut mit einem zweistelligen Ergebn is in den Bundestag einzogen, bedrohen diese Errungenschaften Die neuen Bedrohungen und eine allerorts nach wie vor katastrophale Situation von Roma*, Sinti* und vielen anderen, als „ stigmatisierten Menschen lassen voller Sorge vorausblicken.
In einer Ausstellung mit Werken aus der Bildenden und der Videokunst und einem begleitenden Programm aus Performances, Vorträgen, Diskussion en Filmaufführungen und Konzerten reagieren die Initiator*innen auf die aktuelle Situation und fragen: STILL HOPE IN PARADISE?“
Gezeigt werden Werke von Małgorzata Mirga Tas Emília Rigová Luna De Rosa Marcin Tas und George M. Vasilescu Eröffnet wird die Ausstellung am 7. April mit der Uraufführung einer eigens hierfür entwickelte n Performance von Wesley Goatley im ACUD MACHT NEU. Aktivistischer Höhepunkt am 8. April ist die jährlich stattfindende und in diesem Jahr dem Thema Krieg und Vertreibung gewidmete Romaday Parade durch Berli n Mitte mit Musik, Picknick und einer Performance „Reclaiming the Wheel“ am Rosa Luxemburg Platz sowie einem abschließenden Konzert der Serbischen Rap Girlband Pretty Loud im Maxim Gorki Theater. Ein Workshop über „Algorithmus und demokratische Öffentlichkeit“ ( April) sowie ein Forumtheaterstück ( April), beides in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jugendprogramm Wir sind Hier richtet sich explizit an die von der Frage nach Zukunft besonders betroffenen jungen Menschen.
2007 war die Venedig Biennale zum ersten Mal Gastgeber*in eines von Roma* selbst organisierten Pavillon mit dem Titel „Paradise Lost“. Viele Denker*innen, Kün stler*innen und Aktivist*innen suchten seitdem nach dem verlorenen Paradies. 2022 ist festzustellen: Paradies ist jetzt! Aber wo, für wen? Und wie lange noch?
