What happens when experimental musicians and composers explore Web3 and blockchains? What new possibilities and what old problems exist for music and musicians in this rapidlychanging field? How are musical practices changing in light of the ongoing pandemic? (How) are institutions responding?
Process and Protocol is a weekend-long festival organised by the Berliner Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (BGNM) and taking place at ACUD Macht Neu from 01.-03.04.22 to explore these questions with Berlin’s musical community. The event asks why this particular intersection of music and technology seemingly beams with hope amidst the existential challenges facing the music performance and recording landscape.
Five new commissions to composers and musicians presented in a hybrid exhibition both in person and online, along with a concert, workshop, exhibition, and panel discussions and a series of essays will bring us together to celebrate and scrutinize how our practices are changing in light of new technologies.
Featuring new works by Bnaya Halperin-Kaddari, Dmitri Kourliandski, Lore Lixenberg, Line Tjørnhøj, and Moisés Horta Valenzuela.

Was entsteht, wenn Künstler:innen aus der zeitgenössischen Musikszene sich mit Web3- Technologien und der Blockchain auseinandersetzen? Auf welche neuen kreativen Möglichkeiten und welche alten Probleme treffen sie dabei? Wie hat die Pandemie die musikalische Praxis verändert? (Wie) reagieren Institutionen auf diese Entwicklungen?
Das dreitägige Festival Process and Protocol findet vom 01. bis 03.04.22 im ACUD Macht Neu statt und geht diesen Fragen im Kontext der Berliner Musiklandschaft nach. Organisiert von der Berliner Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (BGNM) untersucht das Festival die Besonderheiten dieser Schnittstelle zwischen Musik und Technologie, in die angesichts der aktuellen Existenzkrise der Kunstmusik-Szene gerade viel Hoffnung gesteckt wird.
Fünf neue Auftragswerke in Form einer hybriden Ausstellung werden neben Konzerten, PanelDiskussionen und einer Schriftenreihe Akteur:innen dieser Szene zusammenbringen, um die Entwicklung ihrer künstlerischen Praktiken zu würdigen sowie kritisch zu betrachten.
