Surveillance Salon
Music, Art & Talk (aut delectare aut prodesse)
Entry is free, capacity is limited!
The Surveillance Salon brings together artistic, activist and academic perspectives on the digital datafication of our lives and futures. Four featured guests will present their work, including pop act Godmother with a live performance. Then, an informal panel discussion will explore some of the real-world and theoretical impacts of surveillance, including a focus on how our personal data is (mis)used to develop artificial intelligence. Members of the audience are also welcome to be part of the conversation.
Gunay Kazimzade is a research associate at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, where she works with the group Kritikalität K.I.-basierter Systeme (»Criticality of A.I.-based Systems«). She is also a P.h.D. candidate in Computer Science at the T.U.
Godmother describe themselves as »critical theory in pop-music drag«. Their self-titled album was released in 2018, including the single »Drowning in Data«. In 2020, they received a grant from Musicboard Berlin to work on new material, which will be previewed this evening.
Digitale Freiheit (»Digital Freedom«) formed in 2017 with the aim of raising public awareness on surveillance and privacy. Following the initiative's political campaigns, workshops, screenings, parties and other events, representatives will talk about the latest action they are taking.
Could Be Happening Here is an interdisciplinary feminist artist group that emerged from the V.J. collective Trial and Theresa. They explore digital surveillance issues through performances and installations using visuals and coding. For this occasion, they will debut the piece, "Are you a good fit for the job of your dreams?".
The capacity of the audience is limited to 20 people as we observe distancing guidelines. The event will be held in the courtyard of Acud. In case of rain, we will go up to the studio (second floor up from the courtyard entrance), in which case mouth/nose masks will be required.
