Cranky Booking brings you the next installment of the Späti Palace story, Collection#3. Späti Palace, one half Barry of Cranky Booking and one half Amande of Julie Tippex, celebrates the release of Collection#3, the third in its series of compilations showcasing Berlin finest bands. We invite you to celebrate spring's arrival with an excellent line-up of Yoga, Bannerman and Man behind tree, all of whom appear on the collection.
The idea behind our Collection series is to highlight the quality of bands currently at work in the city and to bring them to a broader audience by inviting them to appear on our free compilation. There will be a limited number of cd-r copies available to the first guests on the night, otherwise it's available free online forever and ever.
DJ Späti will be on hand to cater to your afterhour dancing needs.
Info on the bands below:
Yoga impressed at the Cranky Xmas Fest last December and get their second headlining show tonight and deservedly so. A skilfull live band who don't shy away from their influences and like to let their Pavement hang out if you get what I mean. We're delighted to have them on the Collection#3 and heading up tonights show.
As has been written of them:
"These guys from Berlin have the guitars and the angst of a post‐punk band but the melodies and catchiness of an indie pop band. Yogas DIY produced debut album Spital Hawaii which was released on Bandcamp in 2013. Since then the Berlin‐based band have gathered a small but diverse fan base: Hamburg School lovers, shoegazers as well as general indie rock devotees will be equally pleased by their happy-melancholic and ironic songs of the trio."
Bannerman combines the song writing of Richie Setford and the musicianship of Ben Anderson (drums), Magnus Bang-Olsen (bass) and Oliver Emmitt (trombone). They have released 3 albums and 1 EP to wide critical acclaim, winning a 2012 NZ Music Award and being shortlisted for the Silver Scroll, New Zealand’s most revered song writing accolade.
Richie’s relocation to Berlin in 2013 forced a reconfiguring of the back catalogue in a live context and became the catalyst for the 4 piece's quietly dramatic new material. Dreamy and brooding ballads are now the focus of a Bannerman show. These are songs that have a compelling and dynamic structure, an often disarming, melancholic undercurrent and an intimacy that draws the listener in.
Earlier this year Bannerman toured Germany as support act and backing band for Bella Union artist Tiny Ruins. Other European supports include The Magic Numbers, Shovels & Rope, Anais Mitchell and Lawrence Arabia. The band are now in the process of recording new demos for an album to be released in 2015.
"...brooding lo fi lush awkwardly perfect glory." (Bannerman EP) – Andrew Tidball (cheeseontoast.co.nz)
"In his darker moments, he might be a more tuneful Nick Cave, but his melodies are so full of unexpected twists, his chord changes so cunning, that I'm equally reminded of the Beatles' White Album era." (The Dusty Dream Hole) – Nick Bollinger, The Listener
"The Dusty Dream Hole is a gorgeous album to warm up winter nights and glaze over the dust settling on your eyes, whatever the season." (4/5) – Brock Oliver, Yahoo
MAN BEHIND TREE come over like a Pavement-Crazy Horse hybrid and despite being the perfect soundtrack to a summer evening I'm sure they'll warm up this spring night for us all.
Probably the funnest live band around, you'll have their tunes stuck in your head for days after.
Here's their bio in german for those of you trying to improve your skills:
