About
The artist duo reflect on their recent residency and exhibition at Matadero Madrid: Siestas Negras / Black Power Naps. The project researches sleep deprivation and exhaustion in POC communities from slavery to today, and proposes spaces for Black rest as a form of recovery and resistance. Acosta and Sosa’s exhibition flipped the terms of access to the art space to privilege the leisure of Black visitors, and demanded restitution of both energetic and material wealth. Moderated by Jessica Lauren Elizabeth Taylor, artist and founder of “Black in Berlin” salon series.
Das Künstler*innen Duo präsentiert seine aktuelle Residency und Ausstellung bei Matadero Madrid: Siestas Negras / Black Power Naps. Das Projekt verhandelt Schlafentzug und Verausgabung in POC Communities von der Sklaverei bis heute und öffnet die Perspektive auf schwarze Ruheräume als Form der Erholung und des Widerstands. Acostas und Sosas Projekt kehrt die Bedingungen des Zugangs zu Kunstinstitutionen um, um die Freizeit und Muße der schwarzen Ausstellungsbesucher*innen zu privilegieren. Darin liegt die Forderung nach der Restitution energetischen und materiellen Reichtums. Moderiert von Jessica Lauren Elizabeth Taylor, Künstlerin und Gründerin der Salon Reihe “Black in Berlin”.
niv Acosta
... is an award-winning artist, choreographer, dancer and activist based in Berlin. His intersectional identities as transgender, queer, and black-dominican have continuously inspired his community-based artwork. niv’s performance work has been featured at Tate Modern (UK), Tanz Im August, KW Institute for Contemporary Art (DE), Wiener Festwochen (AT), The David Roberts Foundation (UK), The Kimmel Center (US), Human Resources (US), MOMA PS1 (US), Studio Museum (US), New Museum (US), and McGill University (CA), and others. Parallel to his artistic practice, he is an activist for racial justice work and regularly gives Structural Racism trainings for Cultural Producers in the US and in Europe.
Fannie Sosa
... is an afro-descendant scholar, mixed-media artist and curandera, based between Europe and South America. Sosa is currently completing a France-Brasil co-directed PhD titled Twerk/Torque: Anti Colonial Strategies for Thriving and Surviving in Black Internet Times. Sosa's work is built around pleasurable resistance, afro-diasporic futurity, intersectional femme-inism and anti-colonial sexualities. It has been featured at the Tate Modern (UK), the Broad Museum (US), Wiener Festwochen festival (AT), Nitéroi's MAC (BR), Syracuse University (US), matadero (ES) and Impulstanz (AT), among others. Sosa’s current projects involve “Pleasure is Power’, a multimedia conference around healing bass, sexual autonomy and oshunality.
Jessica Lauren Elizabeth Taylor
... is an artist, filmmaker, archivist and community organizer born in Mississippi and raised in Florida. Her work centres on themes of ritual, visibility and identity mythology, and she is chiefly concerned with ways to dismantle oppressive institutions and the creation of racial equity in art and theatre, particularly for Black People and People of Color. She has performed at the Barbican Centre of Art (London, UK) Chisenhale Gallery (London, UK) Hebbel Am Ufer (Berlin, Germany) Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin, Germany) Sophiensaele Theater (Berlin, Germany) and The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (Oslo, Norway) and most recently in residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Her current project Muttererde, a film series that calls for femme forms of ancestral history in the face of the often interrupted historical knowledge of the African diaspora in Europe and elsewhere. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Black British Writing at Goldsmiths.
