Acud Macht Neu presents: Northern Resonance, a series showcasing canadian music. The second edition features an artist talk + an ensemble performance with Sarah Devachi, one of the most exciting contemporary electronic composers from Canada.
This performance will be a special concert featuring an ensemble of local Berlin musicians. The focus of this artist talk will be to illuminate the phenomenon of psychoacoustics and to discuss its creative use in experimental music. Davachi will give insight into her own compositional process and explain different methods she employs in both recording and live performance. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and pose the creative inquiries that arise in their own work as well.

ABOUT
SARAH DAVACHI
... holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Calgary and a master's degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College. As a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music, Davachi is engaged in practices of analog and modular synthesis, psychoacoustic manipulations, multi-channel sound diffusion and studio composition. Davachi's compositional projects are primarily concerned with disclosing the antiquated instruments and forgotten sonics of a bygone era in analog synthesis, with concurrent treatment of acoustic sources. Her work considers the experience of enveloped sonic dwelling, utilizing duration, gradual transformations and simple harmonic structures that emphasize variations in overtone complexity and natural phasing patterns.
Her work as a music researcher has been published and presented within Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Since 2007, Davachi has also had the unique opportunity to work for the National Music Centre in Calgary as an interpreter, researcher/content developer and archivist of their collection of acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments. Additionally, she has worked for the Western Front Society in Vancouver as an assistant in archival audio digitization and has lectured on the history of synthesis, sound design, psychoacoustics and audio recording at Simon Fraser University and Vancouver Film School. She has held artist residencies around the world and is the recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She is currently based in Los Angeles.
