FROM THE PAMIR MOUNTAINS TO THE ALTAI

From spring 2016 onwards Tanding spent 120 days following the Yarkant and the Tarim river down from the Pamir mountains into the northern steppes recording the traditional music of the Uyghurs, Tatars, Salar, Hui, Uzbek, Kazakh, Mongol, Daur and Kirgiz in Xinjiang.

From the Tajik eagle dance performed with eagle bone flutes to the Uyghur Muqam – classical melodies which are accompanied by lyrics and poetry originally collected in the 16th century by the princess Amani Shahan – the music reflects the different historical influences from India, Iran, China and Greece which came along the Silk road to this crossing point of cultures. Further North the mind enlarging Kazakh and Mongolic music mirrors the vastness of the Steppes.

Tanding recorded 175 different musical groups and performers she encountered in the villages and cities along this part of the Silk road and presents a selection of these recordings, videos and photographies from her journeys.

Shi Tanding was born 1976 in Ily in Xinjiang province and founded together with Laurent Jeanneau in 2006 the Kink Gong label, publishing mostly recordings from Cambodia, Vietnam and Lhaos.
