    Cementa and Toyota are two sculpted sisters located in the industrial landscape of the Malmö harbor. They reside at the waters edge on the last strip of public land amidst a large depot of imported cars and a colossal cement silo. These two site-specific sculptures, one cast in concrete— the other moulded in HDPE plastic from the area, contemplate on their situation, vaguely aware of the synthetic, artificial nature of themselves and their surroundings.

    In the exhibition at ACUD gallery a film about these two sister sculptures will be shown alongside the works themselves, Drifter, Biofoul and Residuals / Age of Shiny.

    Drifter – which also serves as a bench for watching the film – is made of concrete and a car shock absorber, Residuals / Age of Shiny are the residues – or mutant sisters – of the creation process of Cementa and Toyota and Biofoul consists of a stack of vegetable crates filled with apples for the audience. What unifies all these sculptures is that their material was found on site – an artificial stretch of land built out of rubble and contaminated waste in Malmö harbor.

    The two sisters remind us of carved figureheads used as guardian spirits at the prow of old sailing ship, but their positioning on the waterfront seemingly also mocks the romanticism of the little mermaid – the famous tourist attraction positioned on the other side of the Oresund in Copenhagen.

    Toyota and Cementa are the last in a line of Matti Sumaris humoristic-melancholic quest to come to terms with a mankind which is constantly alienating itself more and more from its surroundings and leaving behind nothing but waste.

    In past exhibitions such as(The Logic of) Instruments For Cycles Through A Hunter-Gatherer-Gardener Matti Sumari applied a techno-archaic logic to build out of discarded bicycles found in Umea-river a mobile quick composter to compost organic garbage and grow on it flax for oil and mattresses, he reuses now with Cementa and Toyota the debris of the industrial landscape to imagine a futuristic trash-animism, both times applying premodern mindsets to the man-made and controlled environment of today.

    ABOUT

    MICHAEL SPEERS
    is a musician from Northern Ireland, currently based in London. Feedback is the basis of most of his practice, using the limitations of himself and electronic / acoustic equipment – namely percussion, no-input mixer, sampled media, test equipment and field recordings – to depict his engagement with reality through sound phenomena. The resultant soundscape is generally dense and abrasive, focussing on texture and spatial / material resonance, which is formed live in improvised performances and in electronic compositional work. // More Info

    JAMES K
    is the solo act of New York / Berlin based musician Jamie Krasner. James Ks album PET came out in April 2016, released through Dial and Jamie Krasner’s own She Rocks!. PET follows up a handful of EPs and singles that Krasner has either self-released or presented through UNO NYC, as well as two releases as one half of SETH, her project with fellow New York musician Gobby. Most recently, James K was involved with Berlin based label PAN by contributing her song Stretch Deep featuring Eve Essex to the celebrated PAN mixtape Mono No Aware, released in March of this year, featuring PAN signed and associated artists.

    AUSSCHUSS
    Berlin-based, UK-raised Ausschuss is a 20-year-old producer working with dark, industrial-influenced sounds through abrasive textures and sound design. His often foreboding and overtly tense productions such as Mantle and Regolith fluctuate between dystopian, mechanical movements as well as more unnerving human elements from breathy utterances to almost melodic chopped up vocals. Having already been enlisted for mixes by the likes of London-based boutique Primitive to Disc Magazine and Astral Plane, alongside reworkings and remixes of Scintii, Soda Plains and Acre.

    FLORA YIN-WONG
    London-born producer, writer and DJ, Flora Yin-Wong (aka ||FLORA) works with field recordings, dissonance, and influences from contemporary club culture. Her debut EP ‘City God’, a tape release on New Yorks PTP, was inspired by Daoist traditions in regards to tutelary deities and the afterlife, using distorted sounds from temples, and traditional Cantonese/Eastern concepts. She has since featured on Berlin label PAN’s mono no aware double LP with the ambient track Lugere. Besides remixes for the likes of Eaves, Scintii, and Halcyon Veil’s Celyn June, she has also contributed to Ziùr’s Co-Op release alongside the likes of M.E.S.H., GIL, and Why Be, and Lara Rix-Martin’s Objects Limited imprint ft. Coucou Chloe and KABLAM. Due later on Caridad Records this summer will be a composition piece made up of seven layers of a violin she played, recorded and processed, released alongside the likes of Lolina, Dedekind Cut and IVVVO. Earlier this year, she was invited to curate a show at London’s Cafe OTO to perform her debut live show, as well as also supporting Kara Lis-Coverdale. Besides previously DJing at the likes of Berghain, and Bloc for PANs showcases, to across the UK, Antwerp, Copenhagen, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Beijing and Sydney, she has also guested on shows on NTS Live, Boiler Room, Radar, and BCR. // More Info

    OLAN MONK
    is an Irish audiovisual artist and performer. Recent release ‘Anam (Meditation Tape)’ shifts between instrumentals and atmospheres whereas debut cassette MONK (2015, Wagtail) drifts between songs and haze. Olan Monk co-hosts CANVAS with a collective of dispersed artists and is a regular collaborator with artists as diverse as Actress and Ashley Paul, having performed alongside artists such as Merzbow, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) & Martin Rev (Suicide). // More Info

    //

    LUGH
    Musician and audiovisual artist Lugh has performed and exhibited primarily in London and Berlin, as well as in Ireland, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal. Lugh composes sonic material which navigates the uncanny valley, the eerie and evocative space formed by the overlap between what is recognisably human tangible and familiar and the aseptic sterility of the digital – the separation of which is continuously and progressively challenged. Lugh performs as a solo act, as well as contributing to various audiovisual projects, such as Sinae Yoos, The Dead by Many Firsts, shown at The Gallery Apart, Rome, and also co-hosts the collective effort which is CANVAS.
