ABOUT
 
Optical sound is the soundtrack printed on analogue film read by a small light in the projector. The experimental films shown in this programme make use of the technical aspects of analogue film as the material basis for structural transformations, but these transformations move beyond the structure film as film from movement to sound, from body to light or from text to rhythm.
 
Obscure lines move irregularly across the frame, while noises occur that seem to be related to the stripes. Through the first scene a rhythm becomes recognisable, both in the visual movement and the audible. You can hear a series of rhythmic pulses with a purring quality. It’s not monotonic but has a limited range of maybe three notes. The low sample rate of 24 frames per second produces a harsh vibrato. The purring is produced by the frame rate and the pulsing is produced by the movement of the body: The brighter the light the louder the sound.

KERSTIN SCHROEDINGER
…is an artist based in Berlin working in film/video, sound and performance. Her historiographic practice questions the means of image production, historical continuities and ideological certainties of representation. Since 2011 she is a member of the Cinenova Working Group of the feminist film distribution Cinenova in London.

The series SOUNDING IMAGES focuses on different approaches to documenting and visualizing musical performances, scenes and movements as well as close collaborations between filmmakers and composers, including soundtracks. The aim of it is to open up a wide range of perspectives on the interrelation of music, experimental filmmaking, and video art, including issues regarding race, class, sexuality and gender. Invited guests will discuss selected works and a short introduction to each screening will provide background information, sometimes a Q&A will follow. SOUNDING IMAGES is organized by Fiona McGovern.
