    BLUE RING READING GROUP

    Mon 10.04 19:30 // OPEN SEMINAR // STUDIO
    BLUE RING READING GROUP

This reading group will focus on the issue of self-optimization (also read as: coping with society’s demands) in its practical and theoretical dimensions. Readings are based on past and current self-help bestsellers. Discussions address the self’s capacities to reflect critically upon the power–knowledge relations and possibilities to engage in practices of critical self-transformation.

Our readings will raise questions about the Eurocentric conceptualizations of technological solutionism, the myth of (personal) development, western ideas of romantic relationships and the humans understanding of matter.

We will provide a short reading for each month. You can join the group at anytime. Moderated discussions will take place on monthly meetings at ACUD Macht Neu and in between via email.

To sign up, please email: bluering-subscribe@groups.io

    SOUNDING IMAGES #7: DOUBLEVISION

    SOUNDING IMAGES #7: DOUBLEVISION

The early 1980s saw an explosion in alternative moving image production connected to the post-punk and industrial music scenes. At a time when the commercial music video industry was just beginning to gather pace, independent labels began to emerge, stridently bypassing censorship and issuing their own releases.

This unique moment gave rise to the Doublevision label, established by Cabaret Voltaire and Paul Smith in 1982 to release video works by themselves and other industrial and experimental artists. The following year, they also started to release records. Cabaret Voltaire had been experimenting with video equipment since around 1979 and many of their affiliates, including Throbbing Gristle, 23 Skidoo, CTI, The Residents, Einstürzende Neubauten and Tuxedomoon, likewise experimented with the use of visuals, film and video. This screening features a selection of material originally released under the Doublevision label, offering an exclusive insight into the diverse and radical nature of music-related moving image production of the time.

    MILE ME DEAF [AT/Siluh]
Their new album is a swan song for the human race. In his previous albums, mastermind Wolfgang Möstl has hinted at his penchant for dystopic fictions that he links to the fragile status-quo of the current state of affairs. With Alien Age, however, he has abondoned the fuzz-and-thrash sound of his previous albums. Sampled beats and loops set the stage for his new album, reducing the 90s indie rock sound of past records to homeopathic doses. This time, dub, vaporwave, jazz and ambient come in the foreground. // Homepage

JARNO VARSTED AND THE BACK SLIDERS
For over a decade Danish native Jarno Varsted has been pushing his blues to people around the world in various outfits such as Straight From The Harp, Rumspringa. In recent years he has been working mainly as a solo artist offering stripped down performances accompanying himself on harmonica and guitar only, proving himself one of Europe’s most interesting renewers of the tradition. This time he has teamed up with legendary Berlin axe slinger Rico Lee, known from bands The Still and as a solo pefromer fronting his own trio. Rico and Jarno back each other on new arrangements of their songs along with new compositions. Together the form a powerful and charismatic package, leaving audiences in awe wherever they go.

    ELECTRIC ANTHILLMAN

– SCHLOCKMASTER // Homepage

    HAND HABITS

    HAND HABITS

Hand Habits ist das Projekt von Meg Duffy, Kevin Morbys beeindruckender Live-Gitarristin. Ihr Debüt-Album “Wildly Idle (Humble before the Void)” erschien im Februar 2017, und sie kommt zum ersten Mal mit ihrem Projekt nach Berlin.

Kevin Morby schreibt über Hand Habits:

“She has been putting her time in on the road and in the studio over the past two years with pacific northwest band Mega Bog, and the Kevin Morby Band, making an impression on everyone she comes across with her natural charisma and uncharted talent as a multi-instrumentalist. But let “Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void)” be her open invitation to the world to step inside and take a much deeper look into who Duffy actually is. Tracked in an Upstate New York living room, then finished in her current home in Los Angeles it is appropriate that this album was recorded by Meg herself for Meg, who has an acute ear for detail, has touched every corner, has seen every vision til its end. Because of this, Wildly Idle feels incredibly intimate, like a secret between her and the listener. It hits soft, like warm water, and before you know it it is all around you a bath, and Megs whisper has made its way inside you. Like many bedroom-debuts before it (The Microphones, Jessica Pratt, Little Wings, Grouper) let this be the first of many to come, for Meg has music in her touch and this is only the beginning. But let us not look to the future now, but instead stand alongside her, our trust in her will, both humble before the void, with her first chorus as the mission statement; hold you like a flower, hold you like an hour glass.”

    A STORY OF SAHEL SOUNDS

    Tue 25.04 20:00 // SCREENING, TALK // STUDIO
    A STORY OF SAHEL SOUNDS

On the 25th of April, at ACUD Studio, Experimental Berlin are proud to present the Berlin premiere of A Story of Sahel Sounds, a German made documentary of the American (Portland to be exact) label Sahel Sounds which documents beautiful music from West Africa, especially the Sahel region, which borders to the Sahara desert and includes such countries as Niger and Sudan.

Two of the filmmakers will be present to introduce their work and for a Q&A session/talk after.

    //

    ABOUT

Shot on three continents, this film provides an inside look at Christopher Kirkley’s project “Sahel Sounds” – a blog, record label and platform to explore arts and music of the Sahel region through non-traditional ethnographic fieldwork.

We follow Chris from Portland to Niger, where he meets some of his long term collaborators as well as new artists. On a road trip from the capital to Agadez, the gateway to the Saharan desert, we witness stunning music performances along the way and after figuring out ridiculous Visa-workarounds, Mdou Moctar and his band set out on their very first European tour to excite audiences, while a hairdresser from Tahoua dreams of America, a place where cellphone recordings are pressed onto high-fidelity vinyl discs for the audience of the future.

Not a strict portrait, nor a straight music documentary, a story of Sahel Sounds celebrates the wide range of musical performances of current artists from Niger, while leaving room to reflect on today’s role of ethnomusicology. Still held back by asymmetrical power differentials, but now backed up by an expanding globalism and new possibilities to claim their independence, artists try to reach for success – on stages and on cellphones. // Homepage

    CINDY LEE

    Sat 29.04 20:00 // CONCERT // CLUB
    CINDY LEE

    //

    ABOUT

Describing a world of beauty, escape, sorrow, loss and catharsis usually needs a strong leap of faith and when it comes to music such a feat is almost impossible, modern day consumption is pulling us by the throats and we don’t have time to surrender, we don’t have time to let the fog, the mystery, the universal shine seek into our eyes and creep into our minds. There are exceptions, Cindy Lee is one of them, a rare all-in lifer, flickering candle.

Maple Death Records is beyond honored to team up with Superior Viaduct in presenting Cindy Lee’s Malenkost, the first LP in a series of reissues (plus forthcoming new music) dedicated to one of our most cherished artists of the last decade. For the insiders, we can only use an analogy to describe the feeling CL’s music conveys: pull out your Swell Maps Lp’s, forget the genre, listen to the exact moment, the exact sequence when Blenheim Shots turns into Raining In My Room. Those 30 seconds, that is what we are talking about, that sensation, that abandoned bliss. Patrick Flegel aka Cindy Lee has been turning in those sequences for the best part of the last decade, from his years as singer/guitarist in Canadian cult band Women, to his brief stint as Androgynous Mind, everything has been building up to this moment. For the past 4 years Cindy Lee has been meticulously crafting her pure universe of no wave, doo-wop, noise, Matsumoto visions and psychedelic shimmer untouched and unaffected by external hands. Music so far has been released and carefully dispatched via CL’s own label and website CCQSK Enterprises, selling out as quickly as people could connect and fine-tune their souls.

Malenkost originally released on Vancouver’s Isolated Now Waves is presented on wax for the first time with the additional song A Message From The Aching Sky, a rock’n’roll number capable of channeling Velvet Underground’s Matrix tapes with the sunshine elegance of Skeeter Davis and 60s girl groups; Claim Of Vanity painstakingly sublime interplay of falsetto/baritone reveals the mesmerizing ability to link Kevin Ayers, Roy Orbison & Grace Slick. Always Lovers is an eerie, honey-sucking tearjerker from a lost Brenda Lee desert island record and album opener No Worth No Cost, is an abrasive noise melodramatic Siltbreeze submarine plunging effortlessly through evaluations about power and value assignment.

It’s up to you to decide where the mystery starts and ends, Cindy Lee will be there: she’s on stage, watching you eye to eye, lips to lips, elegance and poise, dissonance and lace, connecting on a primordial level with music that simply floats, lifts and carries any heartbreaking restless being. It’s nothing or… it’s everything.
