    SOUNDING IMAGES #6: RADIO ON (1979)

    With an intro and outro by Paul Purgas.

    //

    RADIO ON
    … tells the story of a radio DJ investigating the mysterious death of his brother, following his journey from London to Bristol through a bleak depiction of late 70’s Britain soundtracked by Kraftwerk, Bowie, Devo and Lene Lovich. Directed by filmmaker and novelist Chris Petit with cinematography by Martin Schäfer, Radio On is a unique Anglo-German collaboration and a rare example of the British road movie. The film presents a nation in transition, revealing its cryptic and pervasive spirit of disenchantment and the looming spectres of industry and urbanism, all encompassed by the vibrant transmissions of the radio.

    With special thanks to the British Film Institute.

    SOUNDING IMAGES
    The series  focuses on different approaches to documenting and visualizing musical performances, scenes and movements as well as close collaborations between filmmakers and composers, including soundtracks. The aim of it is to open up a wide range of perspectives on the interrelation of music, experimental filmmaking, and video art, including issues regarding race, class, sexuality and gender. Invited guests will discuss selected works and a short introduction to each screening will provide background information, sometimes a Q&A will follow.

    TASSEOMANCY

    TASSEOMANCY

    TASSEOMANCY, das sind die kanadischen Zwillingsschwestern und ehemaligen Mitglieder der Cold-Wave Band AUSTRA Sari und Romy Lightman sowie Johnny Spence am Keyboard und Evan Cartwright am Schlagzeug.

    Ihr Albumtitel “Do Easy” (erschienen im November 2016 auf Bella Union / PIAS) basiert auf einer Kurzgeschichte von William S. Burroughs “The Discipline of D.E. (Do Easy)“, in der er die Kunst des “leichten“ Lebens erklärt und lehrt. “Leicht“ in dem Sinne, Alltagsdinge immer in der effektivsten Art und Weise zu tun und dabei ruhig und sanft vorzugehen. Diese Philosophie hatte Romy so berührt, dass sie sich auf den Weg gemacht hat, die “leichte“ Lebensart zu finden.

    Die musikalische Unterstützung von Brodie West (Altsaxophon), Ryan Driver (Flöte), Simone Schmidt (Stimme eines jungen Neil Young im Song “Dead Can Dance & Neil Young”) und Alex Cowan der Band Blue Hawaii hat dem Album seine romantische Aura verliehen und “Do Easy“ zu Dream Pop vom Feinsten gemacht.

    ART + FEMINISM EDIT-A-THON BERLIN

    ART + FEMINISM EDIT-A-THON BERLIN

    Wikimedias gender trouble is well documented. Less than 10% of contributors to Wikipedia identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

    Please join us on March 11 in Berlin as we gather in solidarity with the Art + Feminism global community to help change the ratio.

    No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Workshops will be provided for Wikipedia newcomers.

    Female-identified editors are particularly encouraged to attend.

    Stay tuned, more information to come!

    BACK TO BIO 03: TRAPPED IN TRANSITION

    This hands-on workshop deals with a very unique organism: partially plant, as it feeds from the sun, but more similar to bacteria in its structure and behaviour. You will learn how to make food and nurture three different types of microalgae. We will spend the last part of the workshop designing bioreactors and wearables for microalgae.

    Everyone is welcome to the workshop, please register on Facebook to help us organize it better. No prior knowledge is needed and all the materials are provided by us.

    SECRET SHINE
    It’s always the people in between, the ones who straddle genres, that make the most exciting music. So even as Secret Shine in their guitars, in their harmonies echo the sound we call shoegaze, the drift we call dreampop, they bring a level of pop smarts to their music that few of their sonic contemporaries can touch.

    On the strength of last year’s reissue of Untouched comes Secret Shine’s new album „There Is Only Now“, on Saint Marie Records, the most vital dreampop label in the world today. Back in the early 90’s Secret Shine got snatched up by seminal indiepop label Sarah Records, because Sarah could hear the hooks in the haze, the vitality in the vocals, so much more than a trend, so much more than a sound. It’s obvious Secret Shine grew up in love with pop, in love with ABBA, in love with the Smiths.

    //

    ENDLICH BLÜTE
    Endlich Blüte stellen schon mit ihrem Opener fest, dass sie keine Macht haben, dass sie bestimmt werden von Schwerkraft, Emotionen, der Außenwelt. Formulierungen im Passiv sind fester Bestandteil der Texte, die sich in lakonisch noisigem Gitarrenpop, viel Hall und schönen Jangle-Gitarren entfalten. Auf den ersten Blick passt die treibende Musik so gar nicht zu den Texten, auf den zweiten umso mehr: Der lockere Umgang mit Kummer und Scheitern wirkt beruhigend, kann neue und alte Wunden heilen. Endlich Blüte bleiben unverklemmt und unkitschig, das Glück wird in kleinen Dingen gesucht. Vielleicht bleiben sie deshalb so gut im Ohr und man trägt sie wie ein kleines Stückchen Trost tagelang mit sich herum. Zum gelegentlichen Knabbern.

    DEAD LADIES SHOW: JOSEPHINE BAKER // HYPATIA OF ALEXANDRIA // HARPER LEE

    Our 11th Dead Ladies Show brings you a congenial constellation of shining female stars from the past millennium and a half. Revisiting the fascinating lives of a mathematical genius, a literary legend, and a star of stage, screen, and espionage will be writer and translator KAREN MARGOLIS, thespian GABI HIFT, and DLS-regular FLORIAN DUIJSENS, all held together by co-host KATY DERBYSHIRE. Back at our beloved ACUD STUDIO on 28 March, we’ll be imbibing a special drink or two and generally enjoying ourselves – so whether you favour a toga, a pantsuit, or a slightly fruitier outfit, come along and join the feminist fun.

    //

    In 1927, US-born activist, singer, and spy JOSEPHINE BAKER was the first black person anywhere to star in a major motion picture – that same year she was Europe’s highest-earning entertainer. During WWII she used her fame to gather intelligence and her sheet music to transport secret messages for the Resistance. In France, she lived in a chateau with her 11 adopted children, while in the States she was banned by the FBI right after being named the NAACP’s “Woman of the Year” for her anti-segregation articles and campaigns. All, of course, after having brought jazz and banana-garnished dancing to Europe.

    Our oldest dead lady yet, HYPATIA OF ALEXANDRIA was a Greek mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher in Byzantine Egypt. Widely admired for her self-possession, she is considered a universal genius and headed a school of philosophy, teaching Platonist ideas to pagans, Christians, and foreigners. This being around the year 400, no one knows exactly what she wrote, but it was probably her astronomical research on the vernal equinox that got her brutally murdered in the end. A lady who lived and died for science.

    Writer HARPER LEE is famous the world over for To Kill A Mockingbird. After publication in 1960, she decided “it’s better to be silent than to be a fool” and withdrew from public life. Having started writing as a child on a typewriter shared with her neighbour Truman Capote, they went on to work together on his In Cold Blood and later had his-n-hers alcohol problems. Despite allowing her novel Go Set A Watchman to be published seven months before her death last year, Harper Lee maintained a strictly protected private life almost unimaginable for writers today.
